The Alaafin of Oyo Oba Oba Lamidi Adeyemi was reported dead today 23rd April 2022. A press statement has surfaced as released by his publicity director Bode Durojaiye dismissing the reports of the Oba’s death as false rumors. It reads as follows:



It has come to the notice of the Office of the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin of Oyo about a fake report making the wave in the social media, by a disgruntled group of bloggers, about the imaginary death of His Imperial Majesty, IKu Baba Yeye, Oba (Dr.) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi 111, the Alaafin of Oyo.


Members of the public are hereby urged to disregard the unfounded report , as the Paramount Ruler is hale and hearty .


Precisely on Monday and Tuesday this week, Oba Adeyemi, accompanied by some of his wives (Ayabas), children, aides and well wishers was at the Durbar Stadium ,Oyo, for physical fitness exercises as usual.


He has neither fallen sick nor rushed to the hospital for any serious ailment, hence he and his family remain agile and active .


The general public should not entertain any fear at all, as IKu Baba Yeye is healthy, physically fit and mentally stable.

Whether the Alaafin is dead or not, it’s yet to be proven as his corpse or living body is yet to be seen after the rumors. In the meantime, here are facts you should know about the Alaafin:


According to Yoruba Mythology and History, Alaafin is the name of one of the 7 grandsons of Oduduwa ( the father of the Yoruba Civilization) who later became kings, founding the bedrock of the Yoruba Civilization. The Alaafin title in Yoruba Language means ‘Owner Of The Palace.’ Oba Lamidi Adeyemi is the 45th Alaafin of Oyo.


His real name is Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi. He was born on October 15th, 1938 into the Alowolodu Royal House of the famous Oyo town. He became the Alaafin of Oyo on the 18th of November, 1970, succeeding Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I, during the governorship of Colonel Robert Adeyinka Adebayo, after the civil war. Before his coronation, the Alaafin of Oyo was a professional boxer. He is popularly known as Baba Yeye.


He has been on the throne for 52 years and running making him the longest reigning Alaafin of Oyo. He heads the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs. He was the chancellor of

Uthman dan Fodiyo University Sokoto, from 1980 to 1992. In 1975, he accompanied then serving head of state Nigeria, General Murtala Muhammed to Hajj in Mecca.


The Alaafin of Oyo has 13 wives and numerous children. In 1990, the sitting Military president Ibrahim Babangida in recognition of his consolidation of the Islamic religion, appointed him Amil-u-Hajj.
