Melody Olulade Am Happy Hypemen Are Getting The Respect They Deserve In Nigeria

MELODY OLULADE AM HAPPY HYPEMEN ARE GETTING THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE IN NIGERIA
Since the emergence of Emmyblaq popularly known as ‘Nigerian King Of Hype’, into the limelight of the Nigerian entertainment industry, in 2021, after releasing his viral hype freestyle EP ‘VIBE’, being an hypeman has graduated from what mc’s do as a hobby and get paid, to a celebrated profession.

There is hardly an ocassion or show these days that don’t feature a special performance by an hypeman. They go by the alias ENERGY GIVERS, as their exhilarating performances light up every show or event they get featured on.

Their performances are normally a freestyle on a beat that is accompanied by catchy words with which they hype the spectators saying things they could relate with, and get a rain of Naira notes thrown at them for their creativity.

There is hardly an hypeman performance i have witness where majority of the spectators are not on their feets dancing as they freestyle to the beats given to them by a DJ.

Recently i went to a show in Ogun State on which i was wowed by the exhilarating performance of a young Hypeman. The normal me will just vibe whenever i am in an event and a hypeman takes the stage.

A few minutes after he took the stage, i got up and started dancing. He was so good that i wished he continued after he handed the mic to the DJ. I had to interview him.

YOU WERE SO GOOD ON STAGE I HAD TO DANCE FOR THE FIRST TIME TO A HYPEMAN’S PERFORMANCE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOU. LETS START WITH YOUR NAME AND FAMILY BACKGROUND

I am Melody Olulade, the second son and last born of Mr Clement and Mrs Esther Olulade.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT ON STAGE MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY AS AN HYPEMAN

I study. I am currently a student of National Open University Abeokuta, Ogun State. 300 level precisely. Would have love to reveal my department but i don’t want any distractions to my studies.

Also, i make music and create comedy skits to keep my fans entertained, and share them on my social media pages. You know they won’t all be with me to see my performance at the various ocassions i get invited to as an hypeman.

Sometimes i video myself hyping and post it on my social media pages to get more people to know about what i do. My music and comedy skits help me as an hypeman as i have to vibe to beats and create lyrics that my audience can relate with.

DOES THE FINANCIAL REWARD THAT ACCOMPANIES BEING A MUSICIAN AND HYPEMAN HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOUR CHOOSING THE PROFESSION?
Yes and No. Yes in the sense that a labourer deserves his wages. We put in the work at developing our craft to the extent that people appreciate what we do with the financial rewards. Not everyone can become a musician or an hypeman that people appreciate to the extent of investing or raining their hard earned money on them. So we deserve whatever financial reward follow our craft.

No in the sense that making people happy has been my lifestyle from childhood. There is hardly a dull moment around me. Like my name, am a Sweet Melody that brings happiness and positive vibes to whatever environment i find myself. I do this without getting paid so i deserve every financial reward i get from being an artiste, as an hypeman. Same goes for every musician and hypeman out-there.

The main reason i chose music and hyping is that, i am a born entertainer and I don’t want to waste the talent. Talent sometimes can be considered to be a pilgrim that we need to hold and groom to perfection. So out of the gifts I was endowed with, I chose to hold and groom music and hyping to perfection, thereby becoming a musician and hypeman. Luckily for me, they both go together.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MUSICIAN/HYPEMAN? TELL US ABOUT THE BIGGEST STAGES YOU HAVE PERFORNED ON.
4 to 6 years for the music aspect. As per being an Hypeman, I started hyping in 2019 and have been on it till date. I do it in conjunction with my music.

For the biggest stages i have performed on, I have covered alot of carnivals, open Mic shows, birthday ceremonies, wedding ceremonies, and almost all the shows organized by the owners of this recreational centre i work with till date, as an hypeman.

AS AN ENTERTAINER I BELIEVE YOU HAVE IDOLS AND MENTORS YOU LOOK UP TO OR DRAW INSPIRATION FROM THEIR CAREER. TELL ME ABOUT THEM AND HOW THEY IMPACT ON YOUR CAREER AS A MUSICIAN/HYPEMAN.

As a musician, Wizkid is my number 1 idol followed by Justin Bieber and Joeboy. I just love their pattern of music. I gain my inspiration sometimes from their songs.

As an hypeman, my idol is Emmyblaq. His career has been a blessing to the career of every hypeman in Nigeria. People expect the same energy he brings on stage, from us whenever we perform and we have been living up to their expectations adding our creativity to every performance on stage.

For my mentors, i have alot of them but one has surpassed my expectation of him as a mentor, so i will dedicate this part of the interview to him. Am talking about no other person than Nollywood A list actor Benson Okonkwo. He has been a great support to my career that one time he invited me over to Enugu and featured in my skit. He has also posted my contents on his Instagram page asking his fans to follow me.

WOULD YOU SAY YOU ARE FULFILLED AS AN HYPEMAN/MUSICIAN?
Lets say yes, in the sense that am getting appreciation for what i do. People had walked up to me several times after my performance to tell me how much they appreciate what i do. That to me is fulfillment.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY BAD EXPERIENCE OR PERFORMANCE AS AN HYPEMAN/MUSICIAN THAT MADE YOU CONSIDER GIVING UP?
No. Even if i do, I can never give up because you fail when you quit. But when you continue grinding and growing your craft, there is hope for success. Walt Disney said if you can dream it , you can do it. If there is no risk of failure how do we face the future ?

WHAT ARE THE NOTABLE CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS AN UPCOMING MUSICIAN/HYPEMAN? HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I face a lot. You know as an upcoming artiste, you will have to beg DJ’S to play your songs. At times after begging them, some will listen and some will snub you. Some discourage me by their looks and expression which is self explanatory.

As an hypeman, before getting this job as one of the official hypemen of this recreational centre, i go to several events and shows uninvited where i beg the organizers to give me a chance to entertain their guests for free. Some agree after auditioning me, others decline. I feel bad whenever they decline, but then i look back to the many times i have gotten a yes and hold on to it, looking forward to another event, hoping i get a yes.

I overcome those challenges by not giving up. I strive and move closer to people that are connected to some entertainers in one area or the other, from there I started showcasing my talent on stage, house parties, and any event i get a yes, from there GOD took over. GOD has been faithful to me and my career.

FOR THE STAGE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW AS AN HYPEMAN AND MUSICIAN, WOULD YOU SAY YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL ?
Despite how far i have come, i wont say am a professional yet ‚ because I am still working on myself and i believe i still have much to Achieve to earn that status. In other words, i am not the best i aim to be yet.

FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE SO FAR IF YOU ARE TO ADVICE WANNA BE HYPEMEN AND MUSICIANS WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM?
They need to keep striving giving their all to developing their craft, be patient, and trust in the growth process, because its not the day we give birth the child will start talking no no no, its step by step.

They also need to be humble, prayerful and never stop doing what they love to do the most, making people happy as an entertainer. If they can make this a habit, the top is sure for them. Their time to he celebrated will surely come.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
Greater than this. Have a collaboration with Wizkid, Justin Bieber, Drake and some upcoming artistes yet to be known. I also see myself inspiring the world with my rise to success story and doing great things that are yet to cross my mind as an hypeman.

IF YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Nothing, because I love the person I am.
